winter in may is an indie pop-folk-rock duo of brother and sister musicians Butch and Joan Rovan. Based in Lake Arrowhead, California and Providence, Rhode Island, the duo formed in the late 90s as the two were entering grad school. Joan went on to earn her M.A. in Illustration and Butch his Ph.D. in Computer Music; after a brief hiatus the two reunited in 2007.

A heavy 80s influence serves as the backdrop for their chimey pop / guitar twang explorations. Their videos draw inspiration from the heyday of rock video and a mixture of high-def & thrift store paraphernalia.

Joan has been a professional graphic designer for 20 years. She is the
Sr. Graphic Designer at a community college, and part time Photoshop instructor. She also works as a freelance designer and her personal work includes her illustrated children's book, "Patches the Cow-Cat."

Joan holds a Master's Degree in Illustration from Cal State Fullerton and resides in Southern California.

butch

Butch is a media artist and performer at Brown University, where he co-directs MEME (Multimedia & Electronic Music Experiments). Rovan has received prizes from the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition and the Berlin Transmediale International Media Arts Festival; his interactive installation Let us imagine a straight line was featured in the 14th WRO International Media Art Biennale, Poland.

Butch received his Ph.D. in Composition / Computer Music from U.C. Berkeley.
